28 Jun Debussy Danses

I’m so excited that I’ve been offered the chance to play the Danses by Debussy with the Academy String Orchestra! Having only been given a month to learn it the first time round, I’m really looking forward to being able to look deeper into the music and try to bring out the huge variety of colour that the music demands. Re-learning a piece can be both incredibly fun and extremely frustrating. Sometimes, your muscle memory helps you in ways you wouldn’t have expected; at other times, you realise the mistake you learned or the fingering you did was so atrocious and it takes a lot of concentration to fix it. For me, as soon as I opened the music I was reminded of how rushed I had been to learn the notes the first time I learned it, and was on edge before I’d even touched the harp! But that soon passed as I worked on it and really thought about the different characters of the two dances and played around with the sounds I could create in each section.
I’m really looking forward to the concert at the Royal Academy of Music on November 4th at 7pm. Come along if you can – the concert is free and you’ll be able to enjoy some other gorgeous music by Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams too!
